Class Descriptions

Fairy Lights & Pre-Twinklers

A solid musical foundation in a sweet, playful format! Our Fairy Lights (ages 0 to 3+ years) & Pre-Twinklers  (ages 3 to 5+ years) enjoy this lovely oasis in that often-challenging window between nap time and dinner! The classes are lovingly designed around the Musikgarten Family Music curriculum, a multifaceted gem of a teaching method that is a perfect match for our studio's Suzuki and Dalcroze Eurythmics-based approach. Each class has plenty of singing and movement, age appropriate focused listening activities, exploration of percussion instruments, and ear training in rhythm and pitch.

Twinklers Classes

Embark on instrumental musical study in a frustration-free environment! Classes are lively, with lots of movement based learning and games. Twinklers typically range in age from 5 to 10 years and play violin, viola, cello, recorder, or piano. Students under age six must have graduated from Wind Dancers/Sun Catchers or demonstrate a similar level of experience. Students age six and up may enroll with no prior experience necessary.

Fireflies, Sparklers, Intermediate, & Advanced Ensembles

These classes are multi-instrument groups of students at around the same level. Students will build ensemble playing skills and work together on important musical concepts such as rhythm, music theory, reading fluency, intervallic recognition, and improvisation. Fireflies and Sparklers are typically ages 6 to 12 years. Fireflies are mid-Suzuki/Piano Safari book one. Sparklers are late Suzuki book one  or early Piano Safari book two. Intermediate and Advanced Ensembles are open ages, child through adult. Intermediate Ensemble is roughly Suzuki book 2-3. Advanced Ensemble requires at least mid Suzuki book 3+ and includes players playing masterwork core repertoire.

Teen & Adult Ensembles

Our teen and adult students are a treasured resource in our studio community, always willing to offer fellow students of all ages and levels practical suggestions and encouragement! Teen and adult students thrive in our multi-instrument classes of students grouped by age. A variety of levels from beginner through advanced students are welcome! Teen Ensemble students range from 12 to 18 years and Adult Ensemble students are 18+ years. Students enjoy this unique combination of master class style workshop and group ensemble playing, with rotating focus on improvisation, rhythm, ear training, music theory, and more! Chosen repertoire will be influenced by the interests of the students enrolled based on preferences stated during enrollment.

FAQ

What class should I be in? Currently enrolled students will be given placement info by April 1st. New students with prior experience will be placed after an informal assessment. New students without prior experience are placed in Fairy Lights, Twinklers, Teen Ensemble, or Adult Ensemble based on age.

Can I be in more than one class? Yes! By invitation/audition and if space allows, students who meet the criteria for multiple classes can enroll in more than one.

I will be traveling part of the summer. Can I still participate? Yes! If you are able to attend at least half of your regularly scheduled classes and are willing to practice near-daily, you can still enroll. Fairy Lights students can attend an extra class (Tues/Fri) anytime they miss class. Twinklers, Fireflies, and Sparklers can attend our Wednesday makeup class (by appointment) or submit practice videos for feedback. Intermediate, advanced, teen, and adult students can make up absences with a private lesson in person, on Skype, or by submitting practice videos for feedback.

Can I register for just part of the summer? Fairy Lights can enter mid-session if space allows. All other classes are full session only. Like tending a garden, musical skills require ongoing time and effort. Daily practice and weekly classes serve as weeding and planting sessions to keep that garden flourishing. If you will be unable to join us this summer and would like to add your name to the waiting list for fall, please fill out an inquiry form!

Do I need an instrument for the summer? Except for Fairy Lights students, yes, all participants need daily access to an instrument. All string students will need a properly sized violin/viola/cello, bow, case, shoulder rest (violin/viola only), endpin anchor (cello only), and rosin. All piano students need an instrument (preferably an acoustic piano or a fully-weighted, touch-sensitive electric piano) to practice on at home. All recorder students need a soprano recorder with Baroque (not German) fingering and a bag or case to transport it safely to and from class.

Will I need to practice outside of class? Yes! Fairy Lights students listen to their recordings regularly. Instrument playing students of all ages/levels practice near-daily with the understanding that occasional pauses due to travel may occur and will need to be offset by extra practice before and after. Bring instruments on vacation when feasible for maximum enjoyment!
